Stratigraphy of the Hydrogen Distribution at Equatorial Latitudes on Mars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Neutron data from Mars Odyssey allow the determination of hydrogen stratigraphy in the framework of a simple 2-layer model, for latitudes equatorward of ±50°. On average, hydrogen is buried under a desiccated layer of thickness ~10 g/cm and a water-equivalent hydrogen (WEH) mass fraction in the 1% to 5% range. True hydrogen content of the Martian regolith below this relatively desiccated layer is 2 to 4% higher in mass fraction of WEH than minimum estimates from 1-layer models [1]. The model is described and results are presented for various nearequatorial regions.

Spatial relationships between patterned ground and ground ice detected by the Neutron Spectrometer on Mars
[1] Patterned grounds, like polygonal features, are the signature of climatic effects in periglacial regions on Earth. Identifying similar features on Mars is important for an understanding of the past Martian climate. In this study we mapped fresh patterned landforms from the systematic analysis of Mars Orbiter Camera high-resolution images. We show that most of them are distributed at latitud...
متن کاملGlobal distribution of near-surface hydrogen on Mars
[1] Neutron data observed using the Neutron Spectrometer aboard 2001 Mars Odyssey provide a lower limit to the global inventory of Martian water-equivalent hydrogen. Hydrogen-rich deposits ranging between about 20% and 100% water-equivalent by mass are found poleward of ±50 latitude, and less rich, but significant, deposits are found at near-equatorial latitudes. The equatorial deposits between...
متن کاملStratigraphy of Young Deposits in the Northern Circumpolar Region, Mars
Introduction: High-resolution MGS MOC images [1] showed that all terrains in the north polar region of Mars lack fresh impact craters and, hence, are geologically young. Malin and Edgett [1] noted "the relatively thin, plain-covering materials observed in the northern plains (and southern highlands at comparable latitudes)" and suggested that they are "the result of latitude depended processes"...
متن کاملSubsurface ice on Mars with rough topography
[1] High-latitude ground ice on Mars discovered by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer suite is thought to be thermally stable owing to the presence of vapor in the Martian atmosphere. However, local slopes can alter surface and subsurface temperatures substantially, and hence allow ground ice to persist at locations where it would otherwise be unstable. Global statistics of the topography of Mars are c...
متن کاملNorth to south asymmetries in the water-equivalent hydrogen distribution at high latitudes on Mars
[1] Water content and burial depths derived from thermal and epithermal neutron currents measured by the Mars Odyssey Neutron Spectrometer are used to determine north to south asymmetries and intercorrelations at high latitudes on Mars. Our goal is to contrast observed asymmetries with predictions based on current climate conditions and potential regolith thermophysical and chemophysical proper...
